Disclaimer

Read this before you rely on anything here. It is short, and every line of it matters more on this site than on most, because the subject is housing, travel and mental health, and the wrong assumption costs people real money.

This is not legal advice

Everything on this site is general information about how federal and state rules work. It is not legal advice, it does not create an attorney and client relationship, and it cannot account for your lease, your building, your landlord, your local ordinances or the facts of your situation. Fair housing law is applied case by case. If a housing decision is going against you, talk to a fair housing organisation, a legal aid office, or an attorney licensed in your state.

This is not medical or mental health advice

Nothing here diagnoses a condition, recommends a treatment, or substitutes for an evaluation by a licensed professional. Whether an emotional support animal is appropriate for you is a clinical judgement, and only a clinician who has actually assessed you can make it. If you are in crisis, contact the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988 in the United States, or go to your nearest emergency department.

What our ID card is, and is not

An ESA Animal Registration ID card is convenience documentation. It records that you registered your animal with us and gives you something to hand over in everyday situations where a person asks. That is the whole of it.

What the card does

  • Identifies your animal as one you have registered as an emotional support animal.
  • Gives you a lookup number a third party can check against our records.
  • Saves you explaining the same thing repeatedly in low stakes situations.

What the card does not do

  • It does not create any right under the Fair Housing Act, the ADA or the Air Carrier Access Act.
  • It does not oblige a landlord, an airline, a hotel, a restaurant or a shop to admit your animal.
  • It is not a certification, a licence, a government document, or evidence of a disability.
  • It does not replace a letter from a clinician licensed in your state, which is the document that matters for a housing accommodation request.

No registry anywhere confers legal rights, ours included. There is no government ESA registry in the United States. Any site telling you otherwise is selling you something on a false premise.

The letter add-on

Where you purchase the clinician consultation add-on, you are paying for a licensed clinician’s time and professional judgement. You are not buying a letter. The clinician may decline to issue one, and that possibility is what makes a letter from this process worth anything at all. Our refund policy covers what happens if they decline.

Outcomes are not guaranteed

We cannot promise that a housing provider will grant an accommodation, that an airline will carry your animal, or that any specific document will be accepted. Those decisions belong to the party making them, within limits the law sets. Anyone who guarantees you an outcome is either misinformed or lying.

Accuracy and currency

We check every legal claim against a primary source and review articles on the schedule set out in our editorial policy. Even so, rules change, agencies reissue guidance, and states amend statutes. An article is accurate as of the review date shown on it. Verify anything time sensitive against the agency’s own current page before you act on it.

External links

We link to government agencies, courts, licensing boards and published research. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content or availability. A link is not an endorsement of anything else the linked organisation publishes or does.

Misrepresentation is a real offence

A number of states make it unlawful to misrepresent an animal as a service animal, with penalties that can include fines. An emotional support animal is not a service animal. Do not present one as the other, and do not use an ID card, ours or anyone’s, to suggest access rights the animal does not have.
